The Digital Foundry team criticized the nextgen patch for Fallout 4

Thomas Morgan from Digital Foundry presented a technical review of the recent Fallout 4 update for PC, as well as PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. The specialist from Eurogamer expressed his dissatisfaction with the update, noting numerous bugs on Xbox and unsatisfactory quality on PC and PS5.

On PC, problems with support for ultra-wide monitors were noticed: the image is simply stretched instead of correctly adapting to the 21:9 aspect ratio. Also the game cannot be launched with frame rate higher than 60 FPS without third-party modifications.

The console versions lack HDR support. On Xbox, issues with the Quality and Performance switches have been discovered, with Bethesda claiming this is a planned feature: the frame rate is constantly 60 FPS, but the image resolution changes. Quality modes with 30 or 40 FPS are available on PS5, where the image quality is comparable to the ultra settings on PC, except for shadows, which are the same as the medium settings.

Resolution on PS5 and Xbox Series X ranges from 2016p to 4K, with occasional FPS drops to 50-55. On the Xbox Series S, resolution ranges from 1080p to 1440p. In some respects, the Xbox Series X|S version of Fallout 4 is inferior to the release for the Xbox One X, such as in drawing distance. On PS5, the quality of shadows is similar to the PS4 Pro version.
