Japanese gamers were outraged by the choice of a dark-skinned character as the protagonist of Assassin's Creed Shadows

Yesterday Ubisoft officially unveiled Assassin's Creed Shadows, which will be set in feudal Japan. This announcement surprised some Japanese gamers, especially the choice of one of the two main characters, the black-skinned samurai Yasuke.

Yasuke is a real historical figure. He was an African who came to Japan from India in the second half of the 16th century. Not much is known about his life, except that he served under Oda Nobunaga until the very end. What became of him after that is virtually unknown, which leaves Ubisoft's screenwriters with considerable freedom for interpretation.

Fans of the Assassin's Creed series have long waited for the events of the main series to move to Japan - the land of samurai and ninjas, honor and conquest. This theme has always seemed perfect for a series of games based on stealthy assassinations in a historical context, but Ubisoft has only gotten around to it now.

Assassin's Creed Shadows will be released on November 12 for buyers of the more expensive versions. Regular gamers will start playing on the 15th, on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
